These three things have to happen at the beginning of my day. It’s my routine. It’s built to help me remember how and when to do certain things on a daily basis. And without it, I get easily distracted. We all have a routine. They are necessary to a functioning life. In fact, they are so important that they are taught to us as children: brush your teeth before you go to bed is a great example of why this works!
Heavily engrained routines can have a negative side however, one that can limit our exposure to potentially life changing experiences if left unchecked and unquestioned. Here are a few things to ponder throughout the day about the health of your routines:
When was the last time you added something voluntarily to your daily routine?
Was it a comfortable shift for you?
Do you know the reasons your daily routine exists?
It takes courage to examine these structures, embracing the parts that move forward and allowing all the others to fall away.
